6 Principles of Interior Design

  • Balance
  • Harmony
  • Rhythm
  • Proportion and Scale
  • Contrast
  • Details

Balance

The key to success is a balanced life. The same applies when we are talking about interior design. There should be a visual balance between the elements used in the room including colors, lighting, linens, decor, furniture, and much more. There are three types of balance used in interior design.

  • Symmetrical Balance
  • Asymmetrical Balance
  • Radial Balance

Symmetrical Balance

In the symmetrical balance approach, the space is divided into two parts reflecting each other. For example, a pair of side tables have the same lamps on them in the bedroom

Asymmetrical Balance

Asymmetrical is a modern approach in which the balance is created between the visual weight of objects that is similar in size, and shape.

Radial Balance

In radial balance there is one focal point and other objects are placed around that focal point. For example a circular dining table or a chandelier.

Harmony

Harmony shows the aesthetic sense, the theme of the space. Such color schemes are used in the room that complements each other.

Rhythm

Harmony cannot work without rhythm in interior design. Rhythm is the use of colors, textures, and patterns in the room. For example, a blue wall can be complemented by a blue cushion placed on the white sofas. while other walls are textured as white.

Proportion and Scale

Proportion and scale refer to the design where the objects are placed according to their size and proportion. Focus on the size of the room, and adjust the objects according to their size and proportion. For example, place the small pot containing tall plants on the side of the table while the tall pots are on the opposite side.

Contrast

Contrast is also an important principle of interior design that refer to the contrasting colors, and patterns used in the room like stripes and florals. Without contrast, a room can look boring and dull.

Details

Details refer to the finishing and final touches to the room. It is an important principle in interior design which includes the shape and size of the light and switches, pillows, rugs, etc.
